Questions to Ask Before Choosing a Business Coach in the UAE
Hiring a business coach is one of the most personal and high-stakes investments you can make in your professional growth. In the UAE, where the coaching industry is expanding rapidly, it pays to go in with the right questions. Use this guide to vet any coach before you commit.
1. Are You Licensed or Registered to Practice in the UAE?
The UAE does not yet have a single mandatory national coaching licence, but operating as a coach or consultant may require a valid trade licence issued by the relevant authority — such as the Dubai Economy and Tourism (DET), Abu Dhabi Department of Economic Development (ADDED), or a free zone authority like DMCC or DIFC. Ask the coach:
- Do you hold a valid UAE trade licence for coaching or consultancy services?
- Is your licence issued by a mainland authority or a free zone, and does it cover services to clients in my emirate?
- Are you registered with any UAE-recognised professional body?
Tip: You can verify trade licence status through the Dubai Economy and Tourism business directory or the relevant emirate's authority.
2. What Are Your Coaching Credentials — and Are They Internationally Recognised?
Credentials are not all equal. The most widely recognised global standard-setter is the International Coaching Federation (ICF), which offers ACC, PCC, and MCC designations based on verified training hours and assessment. Ask:
- What coaching certification do you hold, and who issued it?
- Is your training programme accredited by the ICF, EMCC, or another recognised body?
- How many documented coaching hours do you have?
- Do you undergo ongoing supervision or continuing professional development?
You can verify ICF credentials at coachingfederation.org.
3. What Is the Scope of Your Coaching — and What Falls Outside It?
A coach is not a consultant, therapist, or mentor — though the lines can blur. Clarity on scope protects you both. Ask:
- Do you specialise in business, executive, life, or career coaching — and what is the difference in how you work?
- What topics or challenges are outside your scope?
- If I need advice or expertise (not coaching), will you refer me to a specialist?
- Have you worked with clients in my industry, business stage, or cultural context?
4. What Does a Typical Session Look Like — and How Will We Work Together?
Session format affects results. Before signing up, ask:
- Are sessions conducted online, in person, or hybrid — and what is your preference?
- How long is each session, and how frequently do we meet?
- What is the typical programme length — single sessions, a 3-month package, or ongoing retainer?
- Is there work expected between sessions (journaling, tasks, reading)?
- How do you personalise your approach to each client?
5. How Will We Measure Progress and Success?
Without measurable outcomes, it is difficult to know whether coaching is working. Ask:
- How do you help clients define goals at the start of an engagement?
- What does success look like at the end of a programme — and how is it tracked?
- Can you share examples of measurable outcomes past clients have achieved (without breaking confidentiality)?
- How do you handle it if progress stalls or we are not a good fit?
6. How Do You Handle Confidentiality?
ICF-credentialed coaches are bound by a Code of Ethics that includes strict confidentiality standards. Even so, confirm the specifics:
- Is everything discussed in sessions kept strictly confidential?
- Are there any circumstances where confidentiality would be broken (e.g., legal requirement, safeguarding)?
- If I am being sponsored by my employer, what — if anything — is shared with them?
- Is a written confidentiality or non-disclosure agreement available?
7. What Are the Cancellation, Refund, and Contract Terms?
Protect your investment before you transfer any funds. Ask:
- What is your cancellation policy for individual sessions and for the full programme?
- Is a deposit or full upfront payment required?
- Under what conditions — if any — is a refund available?
- Is there a written service agreement or contract?
- What happens if the coach becomes unavailable due to illness or other circumstances?
Always request a written contract. Consumer protection in the UAE is governed by Federal Law No. 15 of 2020 on Consumer Protection and its executive regulations — a contract gives you a clear basis for any dispute.
8. How Do You Support Follow-Through Between Sessions?
The real work often happens outside the session room. Ask:
- Do you provide session summaries, action plans, or accountability check-ins?
- Is there a way to reach you between sessions if something urgent comes up?
- Do you use any tools, frameworks, or assessments to support progress tracking?
- How do you help clients maintain momentum when motivation dips?
